Hyper casual is a category of games without a story, with the simplest controls. The short duration of the session, coupled with simple game mechanics, makes them addictive. However, on the Apple App Store and Google Play, most of the most popular games fall into the midcore and hardcore category.
Midcore refers to more complex games than casual games. They require strategic thinking and usually involve ranking among other users. An example of a popular midcore title is Clash of Clans.
Hardcore are designed for players who have a strong interest in certain genres and spend a lot of time playing games with a high level of difficulty. Such as Honor of Kings, for example.
Today, titles that sell well in app stores consist almost entirely of midcore games. They are created and maintained for a loyal audience, and their developers continue to do so for months. Whereas among popular free-to-play games are mostly hyper casual.
